No doubt about it, there’s an incredible amount of information about photography on the Web. From forums to blogs and online magazines, the Web is a valuable resource for photo enthusiasts. We expect all photo equipment manufacturers to present their products well on their sites and include all sorts of product information and specifications. But here are a few sites that go beyond the usual product showcases and offer some great image galleries and solid “how-to” information. Visiting these sites is a great way to use our mid-winter downtime by stimulating our creativity and teaching us new skills.
CANON LEARNING STATION
You can easily spend hours viewing images at the Canon Learning Station’s Explorers of Light and Print Masters gallery. Over eighty professional photographers, including many top names, have examples of their work posted here. Canon is a sponsor of the cable television show Travels to the Edge with Art Wolfe. The Learning Station includes links to the Art Wolfe site, which has information on episodes, shooting tips, a gallery and more. PENTAX GALLERY
Don’t own a Pentax? Don’t let that keep you from visiting this gallery. You’ll enjoy it regardless of your camera brand, since there are thousands of high quality photos taken by Pentax owners, and it’s easy to navigate. Links allow you to view recent additions, or sort by Pentax camera model, by artist, or by category. (Portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, macro, nature, sports, to name just a few.) NIKON WORLD
This site is divided into four sections—Education Series, Legends Behind the Lens, Inside the Image, and Basics and Beyond. The words and works of many professional photographers, including such names as Frans Lanting, Al Satterwhite, Bruce Dale, John Shaw, Jodi Cobb, Eddie Adams and B. Moose Peterson, illustrate each section and tell how and why the photo was created. This site has a useful search engine that allows you to search by photographer, category and other criteria. TAMRON LEARNING CENTER AND PHOTO GALLERY
Buying the best lens for your type of photography and style of shooting is one of the most important equipment decisions you’ll make. Tamron’s Web site helps you to select and use lenses, and a whole lot more. Downloadable videos and tutorials show how to take better portraits, wedding photos and many other types of images. Many professional photographers share their knowledge on this site and show their work in the photo gallery.
