Greetings from
Porter's Camera Store!

On-camera flash adds light to the subject, so the image is sharp and recognizable, but it is also flat and lacking in texture, depth and artistic interest. Adding one or more additional flash units, placed off camera, does much to improve the quality of the image. This can be done by adding slave sensors to conventional shoe-mount flash units or by using studio-style flash equipment, but the exposure will need to be computed manually. Advanced flash features in many SLR cameras and flashes eliminate much of the drudgery and yields accurately exposed multi-flash setups easily. We’ll explain how it operates with Canon and Nikon cameras. The Pentax K10D and Sony Alpha A100 also offer wireless remote flash. As a general rule, only specific flashes made by the camera companies for their SLRs have wireless control capability. Few independent flash makers include this feature.

MULTI-FLASH WITH NIKON EQUIPMENT
Multiple flash begins with a master flash mounted on and controlled by the camera, and one or more auxiliary SB-600 or SB-800 flashes serving as remote flashes. The flash built into the D70, D70s, D80 and many other Nikons (but not the D40, D40x or D50) will function as a master unit, or an on-camera SB-800 Speedlight can serve this purpose. The master flash communicates with the remote units, using pre-flash pulses to control output instructions.

If using the built-in flash as the master, set it up as the “commander” on the camera mode. If a Speedlight SB-800 will be used as the master, use the flash’s “custom” menu to set it as that, then select the channel you wish to use for all the remote flashes. If you want all the remote Speedlights to contribute the same amount of light, use the same channel number for each unit. If you want different units to generate differing amounts of light (from -3 to +3 EV steps), select a different group (A or B). For example, you can have one unit providing main illumination and set on 2 steps more light than the on-camera master and another unit adding fill to the background set on -1 step.

MULTI-FLASH WITH CANON EQUIPMENT
With Canon’s multi-flash system, a Speedlite 580EX on any current Canon digital SLR is used to fire other 580EX or 430EX Speedlites that are positioned remotely. Up to three groups of units (such as main, fill and background) can be set up with output adjustable over a 6-step range. Unlike Nikon, the flash built into the camera cannot function as the master. Setting up the master and remote flashes is similar to the Nikon system.

POINTS TO KEEP IN MIND
When using wireless multi-flash, position remote units closer to the subject than the camera so their sensors will pick up light from the master flash. Make sure the remote flashes are within line of sight to the master unit, and within the range indicated in the instructions, usually 15-25 feet. When positioning the remote units, don’t let direct light from the flash be directed to the camera lens or you will have inconsistent exposure and possibly lens flare. Always test-fire the arrangement after setting up all flash units to make sure that all units are triggering properly when the master unit fires.

Take advantage of the outstanding multi-flash technology that is built into today’s cameras and flashes to enhance your flash photos.

WHAT’S NEW AT PORTER’S
All of the products mentioned here are in Porter’s Online Store at www.porters.com.

Porter’s “New Products” department.

VOLTAGE-REGULATED SONY/MAXXUM SHOE ADAPTER
The hot shoe used on nearly all Minolta Maxxum 35mm cameras, Konica Minolta digital Maxxum SLRs and the Sony Alpha A100 D-SLR is very rugged, but the unique design limits the selection of accessories. We have found a source for an adapter that not only converts the Alpha/Maxxum hot shoe to the standard hot shoe design, it includes a PC outlet for studio flash triggering. Now radio and IR flash transmitters, non-dedicated flashes and other accessories can be attached. To top it off, this adapter regulates the voltage to prevent camera damage from old flash equipment that may have high voltage triggering circuits. The Hot Shoe Adapter for Sony/Maxxum Cameras (130640) sells for $79.99.

NIKON D40X DIGITAL CAMERA
As easy to use as a point and shoot camera, but with faster handling, no shutter lag and more creative control. The 10-megapixel D40x is among the most compact D-SLRs on the market today, yet it has a full complement of features such as 3 fps shooting speed, large 2.5” LCD monitor and ISO speeds up to 1600. The D40x is available with the Nikon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 ED II Zoom Lens for $799.99 (030396). We also have the D40x as a Top Value Kit (000495) packed with the Nikon 18-55mm zoom lens, Lexar High Speed 512MB Secure Digital Card, Kinetronics Optics First Aid Kit, FREE photo Finale Software and FREE Spare Battery, all for only $846.97

RAYOVAC HYBRID BATTERIES AND CHARGER
It’s a well-known fact that nickel metal hydride rechargeable batteries lose a significant amount of their charge while sitting around in storage. Rayovac Hybrid AA Rechargeable Batteries feature exclusive Advanced Electron Retention technology, so the batteries are fully charged out of the package and the charge lasts up to 4X longer in storage than conventional NiMH batteries. A pack of 4 Rayovac Hybrid AA Batteries (530298) sells for $14.99, or $13.99 per pack for 2 or more. The batteries can be charged in any other NiMH battery charger, or in Rayovac’s Hybrid Charger (530297) that sells for $18.99 and includes 2 AA batteries.
NORMANDY WEDDING ALBUMS
Adds the look and feel of luxury, with embossed covers, gold “Our Wedding” inscription, and unlimited Lock Leaf pin binding page system with reversible mats. Normandy album cover sets are available in white (561475) or black (561476) for $31.99, or $28.99 for 3 or more. Page sets consisting of 6 leaves and 12 white or black mats for 4x6”, 5x7” or 8x10” prints sell separately for $37.99, or $34.99 per set for 3 or more.

BOGEN/MANFROTTO 190-SERIES TRIPODS
This new model series replaces the popular Bogen/Manfrotto 3001 line and consists of three models. The 190XDB (160343, $97.99) has 3-section legs with large wingnut leg locks. The 190XB (160342, $125.99) is similar except it has flip-lever locks, 2 foam leg cushions for more comfort when carrying the tripod and a low angle adapter for shooting as close to the ground as 3-1/2”. The top model, the 190XPROB (160344, $145.99) is similar to the 190XB except it has a patented center column that swings from vertical to horizontal for greater camera positioning flexibility. All 190-series models have 4 leg spread angles, handle up to 11 pounds with ease and are ideal for digital and 35mm SLRs and camcorders.
SAVAGE 26” WIDE BACKGROUND PAPER ROLLS
Perfect for internet auction photos of small objects and identification photos, these small rolls are a good alternative to the 53” and 107” wide rolls of Savage Seamless Background Paper that have been popular for years. The 26” wide by 12-yard long rolls sell for $14.99 and are available in White (450715), Studio Gray (450716) or Black (450717).
