SPRING IS A GREAT TIME FOR OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY
Late spring and early summer is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy landscape photography. Not only is the weather comfortable and invigorating, foliage is more photogenic now than later in the summer. There are several reasons for this. The new, fresh leaves tend to have brighter color now than later in the season. Also, foliage hasn't yet provided the countless number of meals to hungry insects, so you're more likely to find good specimens for close-up details of leaves now rather than later. Hot summer days are often humid in many parts of the country and this humidity adds haze that reduces visibility in distant shots. The drier the air, the better the clarity.

A KEY TO BETTER OUTDOOR COLOR
One filter that significantly enhances color in outdoor shots is the polarizer. Neutral gray in appearance, a polarizing filter eliminates reflections from practically any surface, with the exception of bare metal. The extent that reflections will be eliminated depends on lighting angle and weather conditions. Other plus features of using a polarizer: it helps hold detail better in highlights when sunlight is reflecting off a light-toned surface and it penetrates aerial haze for improved clarity in landscape photos. You'll have maximum polarization when you're shooting on a sunny day and the sun is between 90 and 180 degrees angle from the camera. Polarizing filters are in rotating mounts, so the filter can be adjusted while you look through the SLR viewfinder to achieve the optimum results. Since this filter reduces the amount of light by 1 to 2 f-stops, the viewfinder will be darker than normal. With a little experience, you will see the color richness change as you rotate the filter.

There are two types of polarizing filters, linear and circular. Both are round and are mounted in rotating metal mounts and appear identical to the eye. Linear polarizing filters were the original type, made back in the days before autofocus cameras. The more complex metering and autofocus systems in AF cameras required the circular polarizer. Since a circular polarizer works equally well on both manual and autofocus cameras, film and digital, this is the type you should buy regardless of what type of camera you use.

ENHANCE FLASH PHOTOS EASILY
Have you ever taken a photo with on-camera flash and the results simply didn't do justice to the subject? The flat frontal lighting provided by on-camera flash may give good exposure, but it doesn't add depth or shape to the subject. Supplementing your on-camera flash with a slave flash is a very portable, economical, and effective way to add depth and ambience to your photographs. A slave flash doesn't have to be connected to the camera, since it has a sensor that detects the light from the main flash and fires the slave flash in sync with the master. A slave flash's independent operation from the camera gives you freedom to position it at varying distances and directions from the camera. One of the nice things about a slave flash is it can be used with any camera, SLR or point & shoot. Slave flashes can be used to brighten backgrounds and minimize distracting shadows and add color saturation and depth to your photographs. A slave flash can be positioned above or to the side of a portrait subject to add more detail to the hair and make the subject appear more three-dimensional. Several slave flashes can be used together to accomplish all of these goals and make the picture a masterpiece. A slave flash is a useful tool that improves your control over lighting in practically any situation.
