It’s only natural to get enthusiastic about photographing landscapes, cityscapes and other outdoor locations when you’re traveling. Being able to take in views for the first time gives you the freshness that often results in excellent photos. But the constraints of time of day, season, weather and schedules limit what you can expect from your photos taken while traveling to a distant location. So even if you’re fortunate enough to travel extensively, don’t overlook the many advantages of shooting close to home.
It's easy on the budget. No need to empty your bank account for a lengthy trip, you can travel to your chosen spot for very little expense. Likewise, if you have a limited amount of time you can be away from your job, frequent short trips are easier to schedule in.
You can return after critiquing your earlier photos. After studying photos taken during your first visit, maybe a return visit at a different time of day, under other weather conditions or during a different season will make a substantial improvement in the results. When the location is hundreds or thousands of miles away, a return trip is seldom a possibility.

Experiment with lighting. The change in lighting quality varies considerably during the day, and from day to day, too. When it is sunny, the lighting is very directional in the early morning and late in the day, adding shape and dimension to objects and casting long shadows. The color of sunlight at this time of day is warm, giving everything a golden glow. Towards the middle of the day, lighting gets more flat and seldom flatters the subject. Later in the evening, experiment with twilight and moonlight to give your photos a feeling of mystery.

Experiment with weather conditions. Some scenes call for brilliant blue skies to appear their best. Others need the subdued contrast of overcast skies to keep important details from washing out in the highlights or disappearing into inky black shadows. Haze and fog add a sense of mystery. Wet streets after a shower mirror color and light from street lights, neon signs, and passing vehicles for added interest and impact. Often times the most dramatic and unique outdoor pictures are taken shortly before or after a storm. Use different weather conditions to add variety to your photos.
Try a different season. Maybe the scene that looks nice in the summer comes alive with robust color in the autumn. Or it has a wonderful stark beauty when captured during twilight during the winter, with fresh snow on the ground. If you live nearby, it may be easy to make a return trip after making a mental or physical note of the photographic possibilities of the area. If you live hundreds of miles away, it may not be practical to make a return trip and you’ll have to simply take the best photo you can at the time you are there.
Combine it with another trip. Reward yourself when traveling for other reasons by taking a break during the trip to take some pictures. Whether the location is one you heard about and want to see for yourself, or some unexpected opportunities appear along the way, be sure to have your camera equipment with you.
Taking a solo photo trip is easier when it is short. No matter how supportive your traveling companion may be, sometimes it just is easier to travel by yourself when the purpose is to take great photos. You won’t have to concern yourself with anyone’s boredom and discomfort besides your own. Realistically, it is much easier to get away by yourself when the trip is of a few hours duration, rather than many days.

HOODMAN FLIP UP LCD CAP & HOOD
The LCD panels on digital SLRs are great for checking your images, editing in-the-field, and displaying lengthy control menus. That is, except when you’re in bright lighting, when the screen is difficult to view. The folks at Hoodman created the FlipUp LCD Cap to make LCDs easy to use in all sorts of light. It attaches to the camera and a three-sided hood unfolds to shade the monitor, while a clear panel protects the LCD surface. The FlipUp is custom-made for the Canon Digital Rebel (10-0909), Digital Rebel XT (10-0910), EOS 10D & 20D (10-0908); Nikon D70 (10-0907), D100 (10-0906), D2H & D2X (10-0913); Fuji S2 (10-0911), Fuji S3 (10-0912). Each FlipUp sells for $34.99 except for the Nikon D2H/D2X model which costs $39.99. See the FlipUp on page 3 of Porter’s 80A Catalog and online at http://www.porters.com.
